In its lawsuit, the plaintiffs allege that Pfizer’s patent on Viagra “did not provide any clear benefit to consumers or health care providers” due to the absence of a “provision for the safe use of any medication that is intended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).”
Viagra, which is the brand name for sildenafil, is the drug for treating ED, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says.
Sildenafil is the drug for men who are having difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, or who suffer from certain medical conditions, such as heart problems and high blood pressure.
Sildenafil is available to men who have taken it for more than two years, and it is the drug’s “third-party equivalent,” according to the FDA.
In its lawsuit, the plaintiffs say the drug caused them to lose their erection and that Pfizer’s patent on it was “unenforceable.”

The FDA’s ruling came on the heels of an appeal that the FDA had to approve a generic version of Viagra, the company says. The decision, however, only applies to the generic version.

Sildenafil is still the drug of choice for men who have not been prescribed it because it has been linked to a condition known as “Priapism,” which causes painful erections.
